When you’ve been sitting on the couch playing with your 2 Twin newborns for a combined 16 weeks, and you get a phone call from from a buddy wanting you to join him in a half marathon, what do you do?
Well, here’s a short story of what I did…….
My first reaction was to laugh, and think his ass was crazy asking me some bullsh*t like this at a time like this. We just had 2 kids, it was the middle of winter, I was knee deep in my 2nd or 3rd box of thin mints that a neighbor dropped off as a gift. It was comfort food they wanted us to enjoy, so I did. So you can look at this situation and kind of tell what my mentality was back in January.
Anyway, it took me a few weeks when I realized 2 months wasn’t nearly enough time to ready myself for a half marathon. I chose the 7k instead and then visualized me actually running the race rather than training for another week or so after that.
When I began my “Training,” I headed to the gym and just decided to jog. I remember telling myself to start off with 1 mile and work your way up to 4 miles. That’s all it took I kept thinking……..until I actually started running. Besides breathing really hard, my legs felt like logs as I was having a hard time lugging them around the track. I don’t know but for some reason I kept thinking the race really wasn’t gonna happen, that my buddy Elliott would somehow back out due to “sh*t happening”, you know. LOL!
Besides, I had gained about 20lbs, I was lacking strength, and it was cold outside. Those were 3 factors that could have prevented me from getting 7k ready. So After about 5 weeks of running/jogging 2-3 days each week, running a few extra laps which turned into miles each time, I started feeling like I could participate in the race.
It didn’t help that the Wife and I went out the night before (Date Night), ran into Jessica and company, ate, had one too many drinks, and stayed out until about 3 in the morning. I just wasn’t confident anymore that I could run 4 plus miles on barely 3 hours of sleep after that.
But I did anyway………………..
The first of MANY Gold Medals to come…
I still can’t believe I actually finished the race and that even after having twins and not doing much in the gym for almost 3 months, that I still managed to knock the race out the park! It just took a little extra determination those last few weeks before and of course it always helps to have the support of a loving wife and two newborn twins to serve as motivation to get you through it. 🙂
Now my boy E wants us to run the Chicago marathon! We shall see! If I do, I’ll certainly vlog the experience this time around and of course you’ll get to see my training on our daily channel, http://www.Youtube.com/TheSocialiteLifeTV.
STAY TUNED!
